Friday Finds

I'm joining Friday Finds today!

Last week my aunt Wilma gave me two pairs of some very old
clogs
– she also gave me an old post card that my Grandmothers, Grandmother
received from her brother many years ago.

It is a Christmas greeting and I just love this
image of a child on a sled.

I’m fascinated by the address – it is addressed to the city

of Luck “Vis” (Wisconsin) and “Noramerika” (North America) and no zip code!.

I love the curls in the “e” and “g”

Making Texture Sets

This week in Beyond Beyond we are making texture sets from
photographs.

My first set of textures began with this photo of fungus on
tree bark.

Two layers of this photo plus a layer of scanned canvas fabric make up the base of the four textures below.

A Week of Color - Friday

A sunny Color Board and a Friday Find

A set of summer color boards would not be complete without a picture of a glorious sunflower.  This
one has quite a range of beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds – cooled down a bit with the greens in the leaves and the brown centers.

Timeworn beauties

I’m joining up with Kim Klassen’s Friday Finds today with a photo of some very old wooden clogs.

Friday FInds - Dutch Clogs
Friday FInds - Dutch Clogs

My aunt Wilma recently gave me two sets of clogs that my Grandmother’s Grandmother once wore – she believes that these clogs are from the 1800’s!  The soles are well worn, the leather is stiff with age and the insoles are smooth with use.  When I hold these shoes I wonder if the woman who once owned them wore these clogs to feed the chickens on the farm, to a Saturday night barn dance, maybe to church on Sunday morning.  She lived life much, much different from my own. I’m certain that the  she would never believe that a future relative would come to treasure such an ordinary part of her life. It makes me wonder - what everyday item that I touch, and take for granted each day, will be treasured by a future family member.

Have a great Friday and an awesome weekend!

A Week of Color - Thursday

Thursday –A Color Board and a Beyond-Beyond Assignment Today’s color inspiration comes from the vegetable garden with all of its lush greens, soft yellows, and orangey-reds.  I really like this exercise of creating and sharing color boards this week – it is amazing to find all of these color combinations in nature.

Beyond-Beyond

This week’s exercise was to take a texture and tweak it to make several more.
This set begins with Kim’s Providence texture:

Providence                  Providence-Soft & Gental Providence-Grunge    Providence-Grit and Desat Providence, Providence-Soft & Gentle, Providence-Grunge, Providence-Grit and Desat

And this set begins with Kim’s Autumn Art texture - I love, love this texture so I made a full set
of seasons out of it!

Autumn Art                Soft and Summery Grungy Spring Rain   Soft and Wintery Autumn Art, Soft and Summery, Grungy Spring Rain, Soft and Wintery

Enjoy your Thursday

A Week of Color - Wednesday

Today’s color board is packed full of neutral colors inspired by nature.

Many beautiful neutral colors can be found in this picture of firewood - light colored tans, reddish browns, and deep purple-brown.  The moss growing on the bark is a wonderfully muted yellow-green color and in some places I see bits of moss in a light grey-blue color.  And I couldn’t resist adding a bit of that beautiful light green from the clover growing in the back ground.

A Week of Color - Tuesday

A Week of Color and a Texture Tuesday too!

Today's color inspiration comes from a bouquet of farmer's market flowers.  The pink and yellow straw flower is made brighter and more vibrant because it is next to a combination of contrasting and complimentary colors - a deep purple flower and a the yellow-green stem of a gladiola.

Bright and vibrant color combination.

Texture Tuesday!

Here is the same photo with the colors desaturated and layered with two of Kim Klassen's beautiful textures.

Layered with Kim Klassen's Culligan texture and Culligan_Scripted texture.

Have a great Tuesday - I'll share a new color board tomorrow, hope to see you back on Wednesday!

A Week of Color - Monday

I’m going to spend this week finding color inspiration in my every day.  I love looking back at my
color boards when starting a new project – the mix and contrast of colors within a photo can be surprisingly pleasant and sometimes unexpectedly beautiful.

Today I see a beautiful range of colors in this grouping of freshly pick summer squash.

The squash in this photo offers a wide range of yellows, from a pale yellow, almost white, in the highlights to an orange-yellow color in the shadows.  I can see a deep, dark green at the top of the squash where the stem meets the fruit.  The stem is bright green dotted with spots of light green and yellow.  The off-white towel, the squash ends (and scars), and the scratched, well-used cutting board add neutral browns and light tones.  Unexpectedly the pink-red stripe of the towel adds a perfect bit of contrast.

Hoping your Monday is a good one!

Farmer’s Market Flowers

I love all of the beautiful flowers that I find at the farmer’s market these days – I just cannot resist the bundles of bright yellow sunflowers, purple strawflowers, and huge dahlias.

There is something so homey about having a vase of fresh flowers sitting on my dining room table – simple happiness :)

I’m joining Texture Tuesday with a photo of a lovely white
dahlia.

Farmers Market

Last weekend we took a trip to the Farmers Market downtown.  I snapped a bunch of photos at the market, the city streets, and at a nearby park.

We came home with bags and bags of fresh veggies.   I made a large batch of kale chips for
snacking, roasted corn and beets for dinner, and we have enough squash and beans for
several more meals.

I love that she is wearing pearls.

You can tell that the morning temps were chilly – wool cap and heavy coat – in August!  Nearly everyone wearing layers that can be easily removed as the day warmed up.

This little guy is so cute snacking on a cucumber while his dad shopped.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend too!

Finding Mini Landscapes

I've been on the lookout for mini landscapes lately.  I am joining Friday Finds today and sharing a tiny landscape that I found yesterday.

This delicate low growing plant has small, beautiful pink flowers and is so often overlooked.

I've been happily beading this week - working with different color combinations, selecting beads, and drawing designs.  I'll have two new necklaces to add to the shop early next week.

Have a great day!

I've noticed our first signs of fall - the color of leaves are just starting to turn!
