Looking Forward to 2015

Welcome 2015!

A Happy New Year wallpaper for you!

I've been busy hand drawing snowflake shapes.  I scanned each hand-drawn shape, created a digital stamp of each shape, and then used each stamp to create a page of dark blue digital scrap-paper (for the 2015 text) and a page of light blue, almost white, scrap-paper on top (you can barely make out the light blue snowflakes on the white - just enough to give it a bit of texture).

Sugar Pears

Sugar Pears

I've never seen sugar pears before.  When I spotted them in the grocery store I actually gasped and said "oh, these are so cute!" (I was shopping by myself) "these would look so adorable in photographs".

As I reached over to grab a box of pears, I noticed an older man looking at me from the other side of the fruit bin.

I was about to explain myself - but I thought better of it - how would I even explain it?  You either look at a piece of fruit and think "Wow, I'd love to photograph this" or you don't!

At least he walked away with a story about a crazy lady at the grocery store, talking to herself about how cute the fruit is!

I used Kim's Burntpumpkin and Paperstainlight textures on the image above.

Candy Cane

For me, the holidays always start with a package of candy canes.  I love how they look arranged in a glass bowl and how they taste stirred into a mug of hot chocolate.

Sweet, minty, and pretty.

I'm joining App Happy Wednesday with a picture of my holiday favorite!

I used the basic in phone camera app to snap this image.  Cropped and lightened in the Snapseed app and used the Mextures app to add a light leak, texture, and grunge.

Have a cheery day!

Paper Pinecones

It is always this time of year when I see such wonderful DIY craft projects for holiday decorating.

I've been seeing a lot of these paper pinecones around Pinterest lately - don't you just love Pinterest!
Last weekend I decided to devote a bit of time in making my version of the paper pinecone - I found the process of punching paper, scoring, and folding the circles of paper to be so relaxing - meditative really.

Plus - it gave me a chance to play with glitter {gosh, I love glitter!}

I posted a similar image on Instagram as part of Kim's new #mystillsundaycompetition - lots of awesome images in that feed!

I used one layer of Kim's "Belize" and "Avery" textures on the image above.

This is how I made this version of Paper Pinecones:
  1. The paper pinecones start with a 3-inch round styrofoam ball (squish it a bit to make a pointy-like end).
  2. Glue a loop of ribbon on non-pointy end.  I used 10-inches of ribbon so that I could have a 3-inch loop (which takes takes up 6 inches of the ribbon) and I then had two inches, on both ends, to glue in place.
  3. I punched out a bunch of 1-inch circles of paper - heavy paper that is printed on both sides (I ended up using a little more than two 12x12 inch squares of paper for these three pinecones).
  4. I scored each circle with a "Y" shape and folded along the scored edges. (Put aside a few circles without folds to start and end the pinecone.)
  5. Use hot glue to glue down a circle of paper on the pointy-like end.  Then begin gluing the folded circles around the styrofoam ball in overlapping layers.
  6. Keep gluing circles until you reach the ribbon end.  To finish, cut a slit in the center of a paper circle, slide the ribbon through the slit, and then glue down.
  7. I added glitter to the tips.  The glitter that I had is very fine, white, and sugar-like.

I may make more of these - maybe with white paper and silver glitter.  Wouldn't a nice scripted paper or an aged sheet-music paper look pretty?

I hope your day is awesome!

Give Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you celebrating this week!

I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends!

I've already cooked, cleaned, and celebrated - it simply worked better for my family to celebrate a bit early.

So this Thursday you'll find be wearing comfy clothes and tucked into cozy blankets.  We'll be spending this holiday with cups of hot chocolate and kicking back to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade and a stack old movies.

Ohhh - the bliss of a lazy day!

As always - I am grateful to be able to share my photography with the wonderful Texture Tuesday group!
